To become a registered voter you must be:
- A United States Citizen;
- 18 years of age or older by the date of the next election;
- A resident of your precinct for 30 days prior to the date of the next election.
Identification
When registering, you must present two forms of identification, one of which includes your present address. This can be a driver’s license, state I.D., social security card, credit card, library card, personal check, utility bill, etc.
When and Where You May Register
You may register in the office of the Board of Election Commissioners, 77 S. Stolp Avenue, Aurora, Illinois, 9am to 5pm, Monday through Friday; the Aurora Public Library, 1 E. Benton Street, during regular business hours; the driver’s license facility when renewing a license during regular business hours, the Aurora Township Youth Services office, 313 Gale Street, Aurora, various other government agencies or with a special mail-in registration form.
Name Change
If you change your name, you must re-register in order to be eligible to vote.
Change of Address
Voters who have moved within the jurisdiction of the Aurora Election Commission since registered should notify the Board by filling out and signing the back of their voter information card and mailing it back to the Aurora Election Commission, 77 S. Stolp Ave., Aurora, IL 60506. Notice of change of address may also be given by letter, listing the old and new addresses, or by filling out an Application for Transfer form, which may be secured from the Aurora Election Commission. All applications for change of address, either by card or by letter, must bear the signature of the voter. All changes of address must be received in the office of the Board of Election Commissioners postmarked not later than midnight, 27 days prior to any election.
If a voter has moved more than 27 days before the election, he may not vote unless he has transferred his registration. If federal offices are running, he may vote for federal offices only.
If a voter has moved within 27 days before an election, he may vote in person at his old polling place where he was previously registered and must fill out the proper affidavit before voting.
Naturalized Citizens
If you were not born in the United States and not born of U.S. parents, you are not eligible to vote until you have become a naturalized citizen. Naturalized citizens must provide the following information: Name (U.S. District) and location (City and State) of the Court where you were naturalized, plus the day, month and year of your naturalization.
